Stereotypes

Cultural reference / stereotypes

Teenage boys in gang usually get stereotyped and judged before they do anything because they have there hoods up and they look menacing to all ranges of people.
Most people judge gangs of teenagers because they seem menacing and threatening to everyone.
Young people get judge if they are wearing a tracksuit and people are often quick to judge them on their appearance before they even know anything about them.

A quote from Jimi Hendrix "Every city in the world always has a gang or gangs, or so called the outcast".

A stat from the Guardian " Last year, more than 1.5 million Britons thought about moving house to escape young people hanging around, and 1.7 million avoided going out after dark for the same reason "

We want to capture the obvious stereotypes of teenager gangs member without showing any gang violence at all, but we want to show how menacing and threatening that they are.

We also want to capture a different side to stereotype to show the audience/viewers that there is a different side to the stereotype.

Old/ elderly people usually get scared and feel vulnerable when around a large teenagers/ gangs of boys in hoodies etc. Because in Certain areas of the city teenage boys usually hang around with the mates in gangs,  on street corners or outside corner shops etc.

Another day of filming.

When we editing the film we thought had enough footage but that wasn't the case we needed more footage.

So we arrange another day to film some extra footage.

So we decided to show one of the boys next day dilemma. We followed one of the boys.

We show that one of the boys have acknowledged what he has done. We filmed under a bridge next to the river. We show that the boys feels guilty and doesn't know what to do.

We decided not for the boy to change his clothes for the next day scene.

So we filmed the boy walking down step of the bridge and going directly straight under the bridge towards the river. As the boy is walking to the river he takes down his hood and rubs his head and face.

Next we had the boy leaning over a fence looking at the floor. Then the boy climbs over the fence and stood looking at the river.
We see the boy pull jewelry out of his pocket and throw some into the river.
When he has thrown the objects into the river he puts his hood back up and walks off.

We thought that this would show character development, for example it shows him being arrogant and robbing an house to feeling guilty of what he had done the back to being arrogant of the robbery.

First day of filming.

When it came down to filming we all met up at the university. (group and the actors.)When we was altogether one of the actors dropped out at the last minute, so I had to step in and be an actor.

At the start of filming we had a few issues with lighting but they were soon sorted when we had a industrial led light which we could control the brightness so we could use that to our advantage.

The Start of our film.

When we started filming, we had the gang of boys down an alleyway, staying there for about 10 seconds either way. Once the gang of boys had stayed there we had a woman walk past and look towards to the boys. We shot this from an angle so that you could see the woman walk past and also had the boys in shot.

Once the woman was ahead of the boys in the alleyway, we had the gang of boys walk not far behind her. Once they got to the end of the alleyway we had the gang of boys turn off into a street and have the woman keep walking down another alleyway.

Once the boys was in the street, we had them look through a car window just looking for anything of value. When they got to the house we had a close up of the items of value in the window. Then the gang of boys jump of the wall to get a closer look of the item.

When they had finished looking through the window the gang of boys rush through the door into the room when the one of the members of the gang goes up stairs. When the other two boys rushed into a room they are confronted by a oldish woman who has passed out on the floor.

So one of the boys checks to see of the woman is ok and the other one phones for help. The boy on the phone leaves the room and the other boy comes back down the stairs and gets the other boy to leave by pulling his arm. They all leave the house in a hurry and run of down the street. Then we cut back to the window to see the item of value gone.

Everything when filming was going well, all the outside scenes we found easier to film than the inside scenes because there wasn't much close ups to films.

Shots.

* Shot 1 – Extreme Wide Shot - an establishing shot. – A wide shot of the alleyway. We want this shot to show the characters are ‘trapped’ in this environment. – we’ll rely on street lighting to set the scene.

* Shot 2 – Very Wide Shot – This gives us a sense of the environment, shows the gritty city scene. – Closer to the alleyway/street.

* Shot 3 – Mid shot – This shows our characters but doesn’t give us a full view of the boys and what they’re up to.

* Shot 4 – Close up – Hands showing pushes and shoves from the boys. (In a friendly manner)

* Shot 5 – Cut in - one/two of the boys mouths within the shot, shows them smiling. (Handheld/unsteady shot.)

* Shot 6 - Mid shot (from a worms eye view) – this shot will empower the boys, as though they’re in charge. With them looking all the same way (Towards where they are going to walk, Boy A nods to signal the rest of the group to follow)

* Shot 7 – Over the shoulder shot – Camera walks with the boys, this makes it up close and personal, as though the audience is in with the boys. This is a lengthy shot of them walking to almost create a false sense of security/a calm atmosphere.

* Shot 8 – Medium shot (facing the boys) – The boys stop in their tracks, Boy A discreetly points to something.

* Shot 9 – Medium close up (facing the boys) Moves into an over the shoulder shot (Mid shot). We see Boy A and B smile, as they walk towards the house, it moves into an over the shoulder as we follow the boys towards the house, they all crouch down by the window.

* Shot 10 – Medium close up – We see Boy A’s face, he’s smiling and breathing hard, his eyes look up.

* Shot 11 – Reverse shot/Medium close up/Point-of-view - This is where we see the ‘valuable item’ in the window through the characters eyes.

* Shot 12 – Mid shot – The group of boys is crouched, the camera is slightly above their heads, there is a moment where they glance at each other and then quickly get up nearly out of frame.

* Shot 13 – Close up – silence is held for a while, with a shot side on from the door, inline with the wall. (Slow-mo.) A foot/leg comes into shot bent at the knee and extending to kick the door, the leg is

centimeters away from the door. (Real time) The leg impacts the door. (Sound is amplified.)

* Shot 14 – Medium close up/Over the shoulder – (Handheld/unsteady shot.) The group of boys fill the frame, positioned so we can see all of them. Another kick is taken to the door.

* Shot 15 – Over the shoulder – Half of Boy B’s face is showing. (Boys face in focus but the door isn’t.) We see reaction on Boy B’s face when the door is kicked.

* Shot 16 – Mid shot – Back to side on, in line with the door. We see one last boot to the door and it smashes open.

Scene 2 – Evening/Night time. INT.

* Shot 1 – Over the Shoulder – Camera follows the boys into the house (Running). Noise is amplified.

* Shot 2 – Continued over the shoulder shot - We see Boy A and B open the first door they see whilst Boy C and D run up the stairs.

* Shot 3 – Wide shot – Camera is inside the room, we see the reaction on the boy’s faces. They stop dead. A hand is seen out of focus in the lower middle of the frame (Wearing a wedding ring). The camera switches focus onto the hand so that the boys are blurred.

* Shot 4 – Medium close up – Side on to the boys in the doorway, the focus is on Boy A, whilst one is out of focus in the background. This shot picks up all the detail and emotion on his face. The blurred out Boy B turns to face his friends, the camera focuses on him and his face is filled with fear/panic.

* Shot 5 – Wide shot – Camera is inside the room again. The hand is out of focus in shot. Boy A and B start to scramble back into the hallway.

* Shot 6 – Mid shot from outside the front door (Puts the boys in a frame) – We see Boy B run upstairs and Boy A into another room. (The audience think they’re going to get the other boys so they can run away.) Once the boys are out of frame, hold this shot for slightly longer to add anticipation. We see all the boys run back down the stairs and into the front room.

* Shot 7 - Wide shot – Hand in focus, as the boys get close to the hand and kneel down, they come into focus as well. They start putting towels down, etc. Boy C and D are stood in the doorway.

* Shot 8 – Medium close up – The woman’s face, eyes closed, focused details of the face, movement in the background from the boys.

* Shot 9 – Over the shoulder – Boy B looks up from the woman on the floor. His facial expression is shocked.

* Shot 10 – Noddy Shot – A reverse over the shoulder shot of Boy A nodding with almost an identical expression.

* Shot 11 – Point-of-view shot – Boy A and B are above the camera, looking into the lens to give the impression they are looking at the woman.

* Shot 12 – Mid shot. Boy B exits the frame, pulling his phone out of his pocket.

* Shot 13 – Medium close up – (Camera in the hall way) Boy C & D move out of the way of Boy B. Boy B is on his phone, dial tone can be heard and as he walks past the camera and out the door, ‘999, what service do you require’ is heard.

* Shot 14 – Mid shot/Worms eye view – Boy A stands over the body, he starts to wipe his head of sweat.

* Shot 15 – Point of view/handheld/unsteady shot – From Boy B’s point of view, running back into the house, and looking at Boy A stood over the woman. This is the first time we see the woman’s full body.

* Shot 16 – Over the shoulder/Mid shot – Boy A is facing the floor. Boy B is in the background. Boy A turns around and Boy B signals for them to leave. (Sirens are heard.)

* Shot 17 – Mid shot – Boy A leaves the house, blue lights flash across his face.

* Shot 18 – Wide shot – The boys run.

* Shot 19 – Mid Shot/Handheld/Unsteady shot – All boys scramble through the house, camera is behind them, raised up and following. (Birdseye view.)

* Shot 20 – Medium close up – Shoes the boy’s shoes as they run out of the door, the door is slammed behind them.

Scene 3 - Evening/Night time. INT.

* Shot 1 – Medium close up/Item of value gone

location

We had a few problems with the location. As time went on we still didn't have an location to film. We found it difficult to find and get a suitable place to use in our house scene.
As a group we started to worry about this but I found a location (my house).

It was perfect because I had an alleyway and an field where a park used to be. So it would fit in with what we needed. The street had an alleyway at the bottom for the gang of boys to hang out for example.

I also live next door to a school, so this means it was going to be quiet for us to film at night in the street and we could use this to advantage to show that there is nothing to do for say.

With it being my own house that we were filming at, we didn't have to worry about the amount of time we had to film there. We didn't have to be out of the house in an hour for example, this might of been a problem for us if we wasn't using my own house.

Basic outline of what to do.

For our film we want to capture the action  and emotion more than anything during the film.

So we will be using wide angle shots to capture the background and surrounding areas around the flats to show the open empty space.

By using this, it will show that the gang of teenage boy have nothing to do but to hang round doing nothing on the streets.

We will be using medium close of the gang of teenage boys to show that they are close with each other.

We will be also using close up of the woman walking past to capture the disgust in her face when she walks past the gang of boys.

Another close up will be used to show the object of value which is desired by the gang if teenage boys. Close up of the old woman laying on the floor in pain and close up of the teenage boys face when they try to help her.

The main inspirations.

When discussing this film with in our group the film " Harry Brown" was mentioned. Most of the group had seen the film and said it was an amazing film to use as an example. So when I got home I watched this film and I knew what they were on about.

At the start of the film there are boys on a motorbike messing around and they shot a woman and just drive off.

Throughout the film there was shots that I liked and wanted to use throughout the film.

We wanted to recreate this scene but just have the woman walking past showing the empty space,

I really liked this shot because it shows the gang of boys robbing and making a mess when they are robbing a local shop. This was one scene that inspired me, so I wanted to recreate this scene.

Interview.

I had a one on one interview with a boy I knew. He didn't want to be on camera or even to be voice recorded, but he said that I could have an interview. His name was Michael or Mickey as a nickname. He used to be in gang and have committed crimes such as robbery and other petty crimes like robbery of a push bikes etc.
So I asked Michael a few questions.

Connor: How did you get being into a gang?

Michael: I'm not sure, just happened and it was something to do with mates.

Connor: Did you feel that'd you belong within the gang?

Michael: Yeah because we were all close friends, we all knew that we had each other’s backs.

Connor: What did you do for entertainment?

Michael: Not much we use to just hang around outside shops for hours each night.

Connor: Did you do any crimes.

Michael: Yeah I did do a few crimes which I'm not proud of now; we did a lot of petty crimes like robbing push bikes for one.

Connor: Did you ever rob a house or anything?

Michael: Yeah we robbed a house once; it was an old ladies house. We knew she lived alone because we see her go into her house and around the estate and she was always on her own. We had a TV, money and jewellery.

I'm not proud of this Michael said. He also went on about his problems with the police. Michael said that he wasn't involved with a gang or any one in a gang no more. He also went on how he changed his life around by getting a job. He also said that he'd love to apologize to the old woman that he and the gang robbed from, but he said he was too scared to at the moment and also he would get into a lot of trouble,

I could have stayed talking to Michael for ages but we didn't have enough time because Michael had to go to work.

Premise outline for our silent film.

A gang of teenage boys with their hoods up, just standing on a street corner next to a block of flats.

A woman who walks past with all her bags of shopping, as she is struggling to carry all of the bags shopping, the boys start to push each other and point to the woman, so they all point at her.

They gang of boys throw stones or empty cans near her, the woman stops and shakes her head and then decides to carry on walking.

Soon after the boys begin to walk up the flats, so as they walk past the flats they notice something of value through one of the windows, so they kick down the door and help an old elderly woman which is lead on the floor.

They dial 999.

Once the boys get out of the house they run of and go their separate ways, we follow one of them and see that he has done wrong.
